Lithophanes originated in Europe in the early 19th century. Lithophanes were made by artisans beginning as an imaged carved in warm wax on a backlit glass plate. A plaster mold was taken of the wax carving and a porcelain lithophane was then created. Varying thickness of the porcelain would allow more or less light to pass through the casting, creating a beautiful three-dimensional image. During the firing of the porcelain, up to 60% of lithophanes were rendered unusable.
Now, modern technology has eliminated manufacturing flaws and have made it possible for us to take your photo and create a custom piece of art. The resulting lithophane will preserve your most precious memories forever.
The above example doesn’t do the overall effect justice. A backlit lithophane in a darkened room has an almost 3 dimensional quality to it that is hard to capture.
If you wonder if your image is suitable for converting into a Lithophane, please contact us and we’ll be happy to do the initial software conversion to determine how it might look. A higher quality image will produce a higher quality lithophane. Original images direct from a digital camera are ideal, but even photo’s taken with a smart phone will yield amazing results. And don’t worry if your photo isn’t digital. We’re able to scan your photos up to 8″x14″.
Lithophanes can be ordered in typical photo sizes of 5×7 or 8×10. However, we are able to create a lithophane anywhere from 1″x1″ up to 36″x120″.
